All i could think of when listening to this is Jeffrey Hudson, Lord Minimus the 18 inch tall proportionate dwarf from the 1600s. Obviously not the same person, but would make a reasonable explanation if it was another proportional dwarf that could fit into extremely small spaces.

What a strange story! About why they didn't want too much attention - maybe they were more willing to play it was a furry animal than going public about their fathers mental disorder. People were awfully ashamed of this stuff, weren't they? Or that they started as a joke but it got out of hand and they wanted to be left alone while not admitting it was a joke. But well, it still wouldn't explain the animal knowing more than the family did and surely their daughter would have come clean old age.
