What is this? Are you some kind of hypnotist? We're doing a deep dive into one of the single most fascinating mistaken ideas and the fascinating man who thought it up. This story has got it all: demonic possession, mysterious seductions, beheadings, public shamings, miracle cures and The Avengers of 18th Century Science.

I feel like the 1st comment is strangely relevant, even more so going into the Part 2 of this story. I noticed NatGeo was suddenly inspired to cover Mesmer as well. Also, why no citing of sources? (Even broadly?)

Unfortunately the comment sections have all become overrun with dozens of witches and psychics and prophets. If I knew how to neatly delete the function from the site, I probably would, because actual people pretty rarely comment here, and me noticing is even rarer than that.

I didn't see the NatGeo show. I'll have to go searching for it.

I am always meaning to offer sources, but I don't want to do so without it being if not aesthetically pleasing than at least not a total fucking mess, and that's taken more time and effort than I've been able to dedicate. For some stories I still have sources somewhere in my drive, for others they're pretty much evaporated. Unfortunately, a quick perusal indicates that Mesmerizing belongs to the latter category. I'm sure I'll come to regret that one day.

By the way, this is a great episode - even better than the featured episode that brought me to the podcast. Here's a non-paywall link to the Mesmer article from March:

I had a poor credit which was largely due to identity theft, I needed a loan to finance my business but could not get one because my credit was not just good enough, after trying everything things went from bad to worse, the more I disputed the lower my credit score went. This continued till a Pal introduced me to Lanx Credit Solution. I explained my position and they assured me that they could help me put things in order by fixing my credit and increasing my score. They kept their words, I am still in awe. I now have a credit score of 782, all the negative items that bedeviled my credit were removed finally. It was good one.
